My Pimple Story (What helped me) - Part 1

It all started as small bumps on the forehead of my face when I was in 5th grade. I remember answering people (many of them) that it was due to hormones because my mom told me so. Before I could get hold of what was happening on my face, Acne vulgaris* was all over me – my face, chest, back, shoulder everywhere. I’m in 6th grade now and visiting dermatologists. They all prescribe me tablets and creams. My mother right away rejects all the tablets but allows me to use the creams topically. You know the results (meaning there were no results.) So mom and I take solace in what the kitchen has to offer. Everything that goes inside my mouth also goes on my face.

I’m in 7th grade now. I write to Shahnaz Hussain for home remedies for my acne vulgaris and my query features in the Metroplus, The Hindu. It becomes the talk of the town for some time (cringe!) Overtime, I became a DIY monger (in pic) and had even written notes as to what all to use when without the help of Google or Youtube. Now you know whom you should turn to when you need a DIY face mask (think of the karuppu kannadi** smiley.) I admit I never stuck to one single face mask for more than a month so I really am not sure if they work or not. So yeah, I’m in my 8th grade and visit a gynaecologist who prescribes me Azithromycin***. I wonder why no dermatologist tells me what the actual cause is or at least what they think it is. My doctor-to-be friends, please enlighten me. Azithromycin worked for me but when I stopped it, my dear pimples came back :) I’m in 9th grade now and have forgotten my pimple less face. There used to be at least one active pimple everyday. My dance classmate suggests Shahnaz Hussain’s range of products. I used Sha Clear on my face every night and it did help me reduce inflammation. I’m in 10th grade now and you know the drill for the next three years – boards, chalks(jk), entrances, coaching, tests, stress; not to forget loads of makeup I use periodically as a bharathanatyam dancer. Hey wait, I remember 2 of my friends telling me one pimple equals one guy sight adichifying**** me. It’s a myth (wish it was true :P) There’s one more thing I have to share with you. I’ve been advised by paatis (grandmothers essentially) to wipe my face with underwear after washing during menstruation. Now don’t be like Ewww! It’s natural and a part of adulting. After all this, I’m thankful for my pimples now. I’ll be back with that in my next post. Be on the lookout! (or get on the mailing list :D )

*     Acne vulgaris is a skin disease/condition while pimple is that bump. Know the difference people.
**   Black shades
*** It's a pharmaceutical anti bacterial tablet. Googled it now.
****Sight adichifying is typically checking out a boy/girl

Why I feel bad after visiting temples

It might be the case that the weird title has brought you here. Well, let’s see what my mindvoice has to talk about it. I find my soul basking in the sancity of the temple (thanks to its aura*) every time I visit one. I feel a sense of completeness. Also I find a commotion inside my head which neutralizes this positive feeling and it is this, the discrimination between the wealthy and the not so wealthy. The special queues that take the ‘who have it’ people inches closer to the deity. The priests who proportionately ration their loyalty (chanting mantras and stuff) to the money (dakshanam) they receive. I was born a Hindu. I have visited a good number of temples in my lifetime and majority of them go by these standards. The already privileged get the privileges. I’m saddened by this fact. A temple needs to be a place from where equality (irrespective of wealth, class, occupation, caste, gender, color) originates and propagates. I have heard that during the Chola period, the Brihad...

Equating businesses and educational institutions – A student’s viewpoint

The ultimate purpose of a business is profit. To make a profit, the business employs people who sweep to people who audit financial statements. Just like in our lives, these businesses also encounter problems that may require an external support and those that give this support are called consultants. These people are well qualified so that they’re able to come up with a strategy, an actionable solution considering all parameters to solve the problem faced by the business. You may equate this to doctor consultations. There are governments that employ consultants to come up with expert advice and strategy to either face a problem or to make their work more efficient. Now that I’ve laid the foundation, I would like to pinpoint the biggest problem I see as a student that’s cancerous for the society: Peers who don’t take education seriously.                This is the case in majority of c...

Looking Back at my Glorious Teens

From being an  oily haired, be-spectacled , awkward looking teen starting in 2013 to being a young woman with untied hair, who can call herself a student, an engineer to be, a dancer, a blogger in 2019. From having pimples and acne scars all over my face to having a decently glowing skin. From dreaming of having those perfect bangs on my forehead to having one. From participating eagerly in any and every competition to being the Best Outgoing Student of my school. From being an above average student to coming 1 st in 12 th std. board exams and getting into colleges I never believed I could be in. From radio to Youtube. From dancing bharathanatyam to dancing for Laila mein Laila. From thinking I know everything in my art to knowing I know nothing. From the Himalayas to Kanyakumari. From being praised for getting into top colleges to being looked down upon for dropping out twice. From perseverance to self harm. From illnesses to recupe...
